Colored glass bulbs float or sink in a tall tube of clear liquid, and they tell the temperature.
When the liquid warms up it becomes slightly less dense, so fewer bulbs can float. Each bulb carries a temperature tag: the lowest bulb among those still floating shows the current temperature.
