Solar House Model

← All Exhibits

Everything in this model house is powered by electricity generated from sunlight. Solar panels convert light energy into electrical energy, which can run lights and other devices. A battery can store some of that energy so the house can continue operating when sunlight is weak or unavailable.

It is a small demonstration of how a home can use renewable energy instead of relying entirely on electricity from the grid.

Additional Information

Solar panels work through the photovoltaic effect, where sunlight striking a semiconductor material knocks electrons loose to create an electric current.

A well-designed building can cut its energy needs dramatically before a single solar panel is even installed, just through insulation and smart window placement.

Solar panels still generate some power on cloudy days, just significantly less than in direct, unobstructed sunlight.
