Analemmatic Sundial
← All Exhibits
This is an analemmatic sundial specially calibrated for Kathmandu. Unlike an ordinary sundial, the shadow-caster is you.
Stand on the marker for the current month. Your body becomes the gnomon, and your shadow points to the time on the hour scale.
As Earth rotates, the Sun appears to move across the sky, so your shadow moves too. The month positions are needed because the Sun’s path changes through the year, changing the length and direction of shadows.
A sundial shows local solar time, so it may differ slightly from the time on your watch.
Stand on this month’s mark and see where your shadow falls. Then compare it with a clock.
