The Inverse Square Law
← All Exhibits
Light spreads out as it travels. Move the screen twice as far from the lamp, and the same light covers four times the area, so each square gets only a quarter as bright.
This rule, the inverse square law, also describes gravity and sound. It is how astronomers estimate the distance to stars from how bright they look.
Count how many grid squares the light covers at one distance, then at twice that distance.
