Flying Paper Shapes

← All Exhibits

Strips of paper folded in different ways fall in very different ways: some spin like helicopter blades, some tumble, and some glide.

As a shape falls, air pushes up on its surfaces. The shape decides whether that push makes it turn, flip, or slide sideways. Maple and many other tree seeds use the same trick to fall slowly and drift farther from their parent tree.

Drop each shape from the same height. Which one stays in the air the longest?
