Aquatic and Amphibious Plants
Aquatic plants live in water; amphibious plants grow happily both in water and on wet ground. Air spaces inside their stems and leaves help them float and breathe.
Water Lily
कमल
Nymphaea sp.
Water lily grows rooted in mud but holds its leaves and flowers on the water’s surface, with air-filled tissue keeping everything afloat and oxygenated.
Anubias Nana
Anubias barteri var. nana
A tough little plant from West African streams that can grow completely underwater, gripping rocks and wood with its roots instead of growing in soil.
Sword Plant
जल बिरूवा
Echinodorus sp.
An aquarium plant that grows fully underwater, with softer, thinner leaves than it makes above water. Underwater leaves need no stiffness: the water holds them up.
Marsh Pennywort
गोलपत्ता
Hydrocotyle sp.
Its round, coin-sized leaves sit on stalks attached to their centers, like tiny umbrellas. It creeps across wet soil and shallow water.
Watercress
सिम साग
Nasturtium officinale
A peppery green that grows with its roots in clean, flowing water. Its hollow stems help it float.
Brahmi
ब्राह्मी
Bacopa monnieri
A small creeping herb of wet, marshy ground, with fleshy leaves and tiny white flowers. In Ayurveda it has long been used as a tonic for memory.
More in How Plants Live
The garden is alive and changes through the year. Some plants flower, fruit, or rest only in certain seasons, so what you see depends on when you visit.
See them for yourself
Every plant here grows on our campus in Bhaktapur. Walk the garden on your visit.
