How Far Can a Magnet Pull?

← All Exhibits

A single magnet suspended by a thread, showing how far its pull reaches through open air.

Additional Information

Magnetic force weakens rapidly with distance — roughly with the cube of the distance for a small magnet — so the thread only responds once the hanging magnet gets close enough for that steeply rising pull to overcome its own weight.
