How does biodiversity help the economy of Nepal?
Answer
Nepal’s varied plants, animals and landscapes attract tourists (ecotourism): visitors to national parks such as Chitwan and Sagarmatha bring money and jobs for local people.
Marking scheme
- It attracts ecotourism, which brings income and jobs (or gives food, timber, medicine and other resources).
What is a zygote?
Answer
The cell formed when the nucleus of a male gamete fuses with the nucleus of a female gamete in fertilization. It is the first cell of the new organism.
Marking scheme
- The cell formed by the fusion of a male gamete and a female gamete (the fertilized egg).
Bhim kept moist gram seeds in a dark cupboard. They germinated well, but after about a week the young seedlings began to wither and die. What does this show about light?
Answer
Light is not needed for the seeds to germinate, but the seedling needs light to make its own food by photosynthesis once its stored food is used up.
Marking scheme
- Germination needs no light, but the seedling needs light to make food (photosynthesis).
At a recycling center, iron cans are mixed with aluminium cans. How can the iron cans be picked out quickly?
Answer
With a strong magnet (an electromagnet): it attracts the iron cans, because iron is a magnetic material, and leaves the aluminium cans, which are not magnetic.
Marking scheme
- With a magnet (electromagnet), which attracts iron but not aluminium.
An atom has protons with positive charge and electrons with negative charge, yet a whole atom has no charge. Why?
Answer
Because an atom has as many electrons as protons: the positive and negative charges are equal and cancel each other, so the atom is electrically neutral.
Marking scheme
- The numbers of protons and electrons are equal, so their charges cancel.
The atomic weight of an element is 31, and its nucleus has 16 neutrons. What is its valency?
Answer
Protons = 31 − 16 = 15, so it has 15 electrons, arranged 2, 8, 5 (phosphorus). It has 5 valence electrons, so its valency is 8 − 5 = 3.
Marking scheme
- Valency 3 (15 protons, electrons 2, 8, 5).
Section C
8 × 2 = 16Write short answers to the following questions.
Science learning uses four ways of finding out: observation, test, research and survey. Which way suits best for each of these? Give a reason for each.
- i.Finding out what the people of a tole think about a plan to turn an empty plot into a park.
- ii.Finding out whether a white powder in a jar without a label is a base.
Answer
- i.Survey. The answer is with the people of the tole, so the data are collected directly from them, by a questionnaire, interviews or a discussion.
- ii.Test. A hypothesis (“the powder is a base”) is checked by a set procedure: a little of the powder is dissolved in water and tested with red litmus paper, which turns blue in a base.
Marking scheme
- i. Survey, as the data come directly from the people (questionnaire, interview, discussion).
- ii. Test, checking the hypothesis by a set procedure (with litmus or another indicator).
Give reasons:
- i.A website’s files are kept on a web server that is always switched on and connected to the internet.
- ii.No two websites in the world can have the same URL.
Answer
- i.A website must be open to anyone, from anywhere, at any time. If the computer holding its files were switched off or offline, nobody could reach the site. So its files are kept on a web server, usually space rented from a web hosting company.
- ii.The URL is the address the browser uses to find a website. If two websites had the same address, the browser could not tell which one to open, just as two houses with one address would confuse a postman.
Marking scheme
- i. So that anyone can reach the website at any time (the server is always on and online).
- ii. The URL is the unique address used to find exactly that website; two the same couldn’t be told apart.
A municipality’s report says, “Our population has doubled in 30 years, but this has nothing to do with our forests and rivers.” Do you agree? Give two reasons.
Answer
No, I don’t agree.
- a.People use far more natural resources than any other living thing. Twice as many people need more land for houses and farms, more firewood and timber, and more water, and make more waste and sewage, so forests are cut and rivers are polluted. That is why the principle of population control and human resource management says the population must be kept within limits.
- b.The same principle says people’s knowledge and skills should be developed through education and training, so that people become a resource that looks after the forests and rivers (as community forest groups do), not a burden on them.
Marking scheme
- Disagrees: more people use more land, firewood, timber and water, and make more waste, so forests and rivers suffer.
- The principle of population control and human resource management: keep the population within limits, and train people to become a resource.
Give reasons:
- i.Plants produced by cross-pollination are better able to adapt to their environment.
- ii.A pollen grain that lands on a stigma grows a pollen tube.
Answer
- i.In cross-pollination, the pollen comes from another plant, so the young get a new combination of qualities from two parents. Some of these varied young are more likely to survive a change, such as a new disease or a drier year.
- ii.The male gametes must reach the egg cell inside the ovule, deep in the ovary, but the pollen grain sits on the stigma, far above. The pollen tube grows down through the style, carries the male gametes and releases them into the ovule, so fertilization can take place.
Marking scheme
- i. The young get a new combination of qualities from two parents (variation), so some can adapt.
- ii. It carries the male gametes down through the style to the ovule, for fertilization.
Give reasons:
- i.Cutting down forests adds to global warming.
- ii.Glacial lakes in the Himalaya, such as Imja Lake, are becoming more dangerous.
Answer
- i.Trees take in carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. With fewer trees, more carbon dioxide stays in the air, it traps more of the heat given out by the Earth, and the Earth’s average temperature rises.
- ii.As the Earth warms, the glaciers melt faster, and the lakes below them fill up and grow. If a lake’s natural dam of rock and ice breaks, the water rushes down the valley as a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), destroying villages downstream.
Marking scheme
- i. Fewer trees take in less carbon dioxide, so more greenhouse gas traps heat.
- ii. Warming melts the glaciers, the lakes grow, and a broken dam would cause a GLOF.
The computer lab of a school has 20 computers of 150 W each. They are used for 5 hours every day.
- i.Calculate the electrical energy they use in a day, in units.
- ii.The school decides to switch them off during the 1-hour lunch break. How many units are saved in 25 school days, and how much money is saved if one unit costs Rs 10?
Answer
i. = 150 W = 150/1000 kW = 0.15 kW, = 20, = 5 h
ii. Saved in a day = 0.15 × 20 × 1 = 3 units. In 25 days = 3 × 25 = 75 units. Money saved = 75 × Rs 10 = Rs 750.
Marking scheme
- i. 0.15 kW × 20 × 5 h = 15 units.
- ii. 3 units a day × 25 = 75 units, saving Rs 750.
Balance these skeleton equations:
- i.Al + O₂ → Al₂O₃
- ii.Mg + N₂ → Mg₃N₂
Answer
i. There are 2 O on the left and 3 on the right; 6 is the smallest number both go into. Put 3 before O₂ and 2 before Al₂O₃: Al + 3O₂ → 2Al₂O₃. Now there are 4 Al on the right, so put 4 before Al:
Check: 4 Al and 6 O on each side.
ii. There are 3 Mg on the right, so put 3 before Mg:
Check: 3 Mg and 2 N on each side.
Marking scheme
- i. 4Al + 3O₂ → 2Al₂O₃.
- ii. 3Mg + N₂ → Mg₃N₂.
What is a galaxy? Write any two shapes of galaxies.
Answer
A galaxy is a huge collection of stars, with clouds of gas and dust (nebulae), held together by gravity. Our Solar System is in the Milky Way galaxy.
Any two shapes: spiral (like the Milky Way and Andromeda), elliptical, lenticular (lens-shaped), ring-shaped, irregular.
Marking scheme
- A huge collection of stars, gas and dust held together by gravity.
- Any two shapes: spiral, elliptical, lenticular, ring, irregular.
Section D
4 × 4 = 16Write long answers to the following questions.
The nucleus is called the control center of the cell.
- i.Draw a labeled diagram of the nucleus, showing its four parts. (1)
- ii.Why is the nucleus called the control center (brain) of the cell? (1)
- iii.What does the nucleolus make? (1)
- iv.What are chromatin fibers made of, and how many chromosomes are there in a body cell of a human? (1)
Answer
i. A round nucleus with a double nuclear membrane with pores, the liquid nucleoplasm inside, a dark nucleolus, and fine threads of chromatin.
- ii.It controls and coordinates the work of all the other parts of the cell: its metabolism, its growth and the movement of materials in it. It also carries the genetic characters.
- iii.Ribosomes, which pass out through the pores of the nuclear membrane into the cytoplasm.
- iv.DNA wound around proteins (histones). A human body cell has 46 chromosomes, in 23 pairs.
Marking scheme
- i. Nucleus drawn with the nuclear membrane (with pores), nucleoplasm, nucleolus and chromatin labeled.
- ii. It controls and coordinates all the activities of the cell.
- iii. Ribosomes.
- iv. DNA and proteins; 46 chromosomes (23 pairs).
An ambulance on the Araniko Highway is moving at 36 km/h. When the road is clear, it speeds up steadily to 90 km/h in 6 seconds.
- i.Change both velocities into m/s. (1)
- ii.Calculate the acceleration of the ambulance. (1)
- iii.Calculate the distance it covers in those 6 seconds. (1)
- iv.Later, the driver brakes for a speed breaker, and the ambulance slows steadily from 90 km/h to 18 km/h in 4 seconds. Calculate its retardation. (1)
Answer
i. 1 km/h = 5/18 m/s, so
- ii.
- iii.It speeds up steadily, so its average velocity is
and the distance covered is .
iv. 18 km/h = 18 × 5/18 = 5 m/s. So = 25 m/s, = 5 m/s, = 4 s:
The acceleration is −5 m/s², so the retardation is 5 m/s².
Marking scheme
- i. 36 km/h = 10 m/s and 90 km/h = 25 m/s.
- ii. a = (25 − 10) ÷ 6 = 2.5 m/s².
- iii. Average velocity 17.5 m/s, distance 17.5 × 6 = 105 m.
- iv. 18 km/h = 5 m/s; (5 − 25) ÷ 4 = −5 m/s², so the retardation is 5 m/s².
An iron water pipe 1.02 km long runs straight along a road. Suman puts his ear to one end of it, and his friend strikes the other end once with a hammer. Suman hears the knock twice. (Speed of sound in air = 340 m/s; in iron = 5,100 m/s.)
- i.Why does Suman hear two sounds from one knock? (1)
- ii.How long does the sound take to reach him through the air? (1)
- iii.How long does it take through the iron, and how long after the first sound does he hear the second? (1)
- iv.His friend says, “The sound in the iron travels faster, so it must have a higher frequency.” Is he right? Give a reason. (1)
Answer
- i.The sound of the knock travels to Suman along two paths, through the iron of the pipe and through the air. Sound travels much faster in a solid like iron than in air, so the sound through the iron arrives first and the sound through the air later.
- ii.Distance = 1.02 km = 1,020 m.
iii.
So he hears the second sound 3 − 0.2 = 2.8 s after the first.
iv. No. The frequency is set by the source (the knock of the hammer on the pipe), and it doesn’t change from one medium to another. From , with the same frequency and a higher speed, it is the wavelength that is longer in the iron (15 times as long, since 5,100 ÷ 340 = 15).
Marking scheme
- i. The sound travels through both the iron and the air, faster in the iron, so it arrives twice.
- ii. 1,020 m ÷ 340 m/s = 3 s.
- iii. 1,020 m ÷ 5,100 m/s = 0.2 s; gap 3 − 0.2 = 2.8 s.
- iv. No: the frequency is set by the source and stays the same; the wavelength is longer in the iron.
Grade 8 students of a school in Dhulikhel did four reactions in the laboratory, and wrote these skeleton equations in their reports. Balance each equation, and write what the reaction shows.
- i.Mg + HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂ (1)
- ii.H₂SO₄ + KOH → K₂SO₄ + H₂O (1)
- iii.H₂SO₄ + NaCl → Na₂SO₄ + HCl (1)
- iv.Ca(HCO₃)₂ + Ca(OH)₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O (1)
Answer
- i.. An acid reacts with a metal to form a salt (magnesium chloride) and hydrogen gas.
- ii.. An acid and a base react to form a salt (potassium sulphate) and water: neutralization.
- iii.. A salt reacts with an acid to form a new salt (sodium sulphate) and a new acid (hydrochloric acid).
- iv.. This is Clark’s method: calcium hydroxide (lime) turns the dissolved calcium bicarbonate into insoluble calcium carbonate, which settles out, so the temporary hardness of water is removed.
Marking scheme
- i. Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂: an acid and a metal give a salt and hydrogen.
- ii. H₂SO₄ + 2KOH → K₂SO₄ + 2H₂O: neutralization (acid + base → salt + water).
- iii. H₂SO₄ + 2NaCl → Na₂SO₄ + 2HCl: a salt and an acid give a new salt and a new acid.
- iv. Ca(HCO₃)₂ + Ca(OH)₂ → 2CaCO₃ + 2H₂O: Clark’s method, removing temporary hardness.
