Questions 5 and 6
Ramnaresh Mahato scored 30 marks in all in two subjects, English and Mathematics, in the first terminal examination of Grade 10. If he had scored 2 more marks in Mathematics and 3 fewer in English, the product of his two marks would have been 210. Find his marks in each subject.
Answer
Let his Mathematics mark be x; his English mark is 30 − x.
Mathematics 12 and English 18, or Mathematics 13 and English 17. Both fit: 14 × 15 = 210 and 15 × 14 = 210.
A rectangular playground’s longer side is 30 m more than its shorter side, and its diagonal is 60 m more than its shorter side.
- a.Find the length and breadth of the playground.
- b.How many artificial grass turfs of 12 m × 3 m are needed to cover it?
- c.It is to be fenced 4 times round with barbed wire costing Rs 15 a meter. How much will the wire cost?
Answer
a. Let the shorter side be x m. By Pythagoras’ theorem:
x = −30 is rejected. Breadth 90 m, length 120 m (and the diagonal 150 m).
- b.Area 120 × 90 = 10800 m²; one turf is 36 m². 10800 ÷ 36 = 300 turfs (12 m along the length and 3 m across fit exactly: 10 × 30).
- c.Perimeter 2(120 + 90) = 420 m; 4 rounds are 1,680 m. 1680 × 15 = Rs 25,200.
Questions to discuss
A cuboid measures (x − 2), (x + 3) and (x + 1) units. Write its volume as an expression. Then choose a value of x and find its actual volume. Which values of x are allowed?
Answer
cubic units (a cubic, not a quadratic: three lengths are multiplied).
For example, with x = 5: 3 × 8 × 6 = 144 cubic units.
Every side must be positive, and x − 2 is the smallest, so x must be more than 2.
A rectangle is (x + 5) long and (x − 3) wide. For which value of x is its area zero? Explain with a sketch.
Answer
The area (x + 5)(x − 3) is 0 when x = 3 or x = −5. At x = 3 the width is 0: the rectangle is squashed flat into a line 8 long. At x = −5 the length is 0 but the width is −8, which no rectangle can have, so only x = 3 makes sense. A product is zero exactly when one factor is zero: that is the factorization method in a picture.
For which value of x is ? If a square has side (x + 2), what does this value mean?
Answer
, so x = −2 (both roots equal). The square of side x + 2 then has side 0 and area 0. For any other x the area is positive, which is why this equation has only one root.
Twice your age is half your friend’s grandmother’s age. Using your own age and your mother’s, find the difference between your mother’s age and the grandmother’s.
Answer
The answer depends on your family. If you are 15, the grandmother is 4 × 15 = 60; if your mother is 40, the difference is 20 years. In general, with your age a and your mother’s m, the difference is 4a − m years (or m − 4a if your mother is older).

A father is 40 and his son 13. How many years ago was the product of their ages 198?
Answer
(40 − x)(13 − x) = 198, , (x − 7)(x − 46) = 0.
46 years ago the son wasn’t born, so 7 years ago (33 × 6 = 198 ✓).

A husband is 35 and his wife 27. How many years ago was the product of their ages 425?
Answer
(35 − x)(27 − x) = 425, , (x − 10)(x − 52) = 0.
52 years ago neither was born, so 10 years ago (25 × 17 = 425 ✓).
Question 17
The hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is 25 m, and its other two sides differ by 17 m. Find those two sides.
Answer
, , , (x + 24)(x − 7) = 0.
7 m and 24 m (49 + 576 = 625 ✓).
The hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is 6 m more than twice its shortest side, and its third side is 2 m less than the hypotenuse. Find all three sides.

A rectangular plot has area 2,000 m² and perimeter 180 m. To make it a square, by what percentage must its length be reduced, and why?
Answer
x + y = 90, xy = 2000: , (x − 50)(x − 40) = 0: length 50 m, breadth 40 m.
A square needs equal sides, so the length must come down to the breadth, 40 m: a cut of 10 m, and 20%.
Questions 18 and 19
A two-digit number is four times the sum of its digits and three times the product of its digits. Find the number.
Answer
Tens digit x, units digit y: 10x + y = 4(x + y), so 6x = 3y and y = 2x.
10x + 2x = 3x · 2x, so , 6x(x − 2) = 0. The tens digit can’t be 0, so x = 2, y = 4.
24. Check: 4 × 6 = 24 ✓ and 3 × 8 = 24 ✓.
An institute planned to share 180 pencils equally among the students enrolled in Grade 1. On the day, 5 students were absent, so each student present got 3 more pencils.
- a.How many students were enrolled in Grade 1?
- b.How many pencils did each student present get?
Answer
- a.. Dividing by 3 and multiplying by x(x − 5): 60x − 60(x − 5) = x(x − 5), so , (x − 20)(x + 15) = 0. 20 students.
- b.15 were present: 180 ÷ 15 = 12 pencils each (3 more than the planned 9).
