The Storm Glass

← All Exhibits

A sealed glass of liquid in which crystals form, grow, and dissolve as the days change.

In the 1860s, Admiral Robert FitzRoy, a pioneer of weather forecasting, popularized storm glasses as a way to predict weather. Today we know the crystals mostly respond to temperature, so the glass isn’t a reliable forecast, but it’s lovely to watch.

Look at the crystals today, then again on a colder or warmer day. How have they changed?
