Magnetism

Earth’s Magnetic Field

← All Exhibits

A compass needle points to magnetic north, which is not quite the same as true north. The difference, called declination, changes from place to place, and this map shows it for the whole world.

Earth’s magnetic field slowly shifts, so scientists update this map every five years. In Nepal the difference is close to zero, so a compass points almost exactly north.

Find Nepal on the map. Then find a place where a compass points far away from true north.
