Medicinal and Culinary Herbs of Nepal

← All Exhibits

This collection contains dried herbs and plant products used in cooking, traditional remedies, or both. All of the plants represented here are found in Nepal.

Look for the yellow dot: it means the living plant can also be found growing in the Science Playground garden.

Additional Information

Drying doesn’t remove an herb’s aromatic oils — it just removes water, which is why dried herbs often smell and taste more concentrated than fresh ones.

Many cultures dried herbs and plants as one of the earliest methods of long-term food preservation, long before refrigeration existed.

Herbs are best dried away from direct sunlight, since UV light breaks down the same aromatic oils that give them their flavor.
