Stopped: flat rings drawn on a flat disc, each a little off-center.
Tricks of motion
Spinning circles that pop out
Watch the disc turn for a while. Is it flat?
It is flat, but after a few turns it becomes a cone poking out toward you, or a tunnel going in.
Why? The rings slide against each other as the disc turns, the way the parts of a real cone would as it wobbled, and your brain picks the 3D shape. The artist Marcel Duchamp made spinning discs like this in 1935 and called them Rotoreliefs.
