Exercise 20.1

Question 1

a.

Name the perpendicular, the base and the hypotenuse, taking φ \varphi as the reference angle.

Answer

Opposite φ \varphi (at C) is AB. Perpendicular p = AB, base b = BC, hypotenuse h = AC.

b.

Write the six trigonometric ratios of φ \varphi .

Answer

sin⁡φ=ABAC \sin\varphi = \dfrac{AB}{AC} , cos⁡φ=BCAC \cos\varphi = \dfrac{BC}{AC} , tan⁡φ=ABBC \tan\varphi = \dfrac{AB}{BC} , cosec⁡φ=ACAB \operatorname{cosec}\varphi = \dfrac{AC}{AB} , sec⁡φ=ACBC \sec\varphi = \dfrac{AC}{BC} , cot⁡φ=BCAB \cot\varphi = \dfrac{BC}{AB} .

c.

Name the perpendicular, the base and the hypotenuse, taking β as the reference angle.

Answer

Opposite β (at A) is BC. Perpendicular p = BC, base b = AB, hypotenuse h = AC.

d.

Write the six trigonometric ratios of β.

Answer

sin⁡β=BCAC \sin\beta = \dfrac{BC}{AC} , cos⁡β=ABAC \cos\beta = \dfrac{AB}{AC} , tan⁡β=BCAB \tan\beta = \dfrac{BC}{AB} , cosec⁡β=ACBC \operatorname{cosec}\beta = \dfrac{AC}{BC} , sec⁡β=ACAB \sec\beta = \dfrac{AC}{AB} , cot⁡β=ABBC \cot\beta = \dfrac{AB}{BC} .
Notice that sin⁡β=cos⁡φ \sin\beta = \cos\varphi and cos⁡β=sin⁡φ \cos\beta = \sin\varphi : the two acute angles share their sides with the roles swapped.

Question 2

a.

Find sin β, cos β and tan β.

Answer

First the hypotenuse: PR=62+82=100=10 PR = \sqrt{6^2 + 8^2} = \sqrt{100} = 10 . From β at P: p = QR = 8, b = PQ = 6.
sin⁡β=810=45 \sin\beta = \dfrac{8}{10} = \dfrac45 , cos⁡β=610=35 \cos\beta = \dfrac{6}{10} = \dfrac35 , tan⁡β=86=43 \tan\beta = \dfrac86 = \dfrac43 .

b.

Find cosec⁡β \operatorname{cosec}\beta , sec⁡β \sec\beta and cot⁡β \cot\beta .

If sin⁡θ=610 \sin\theta = \dfrac{6}{10} and h = 20, find b.

Answer

p20=610 \dfrac{p}{20} = \dfrac{6}{10} , so p = 12. Then b=202−122=400−144=256= b = \sqrt{20^2 - 12^2} = \sqrt{400 - 144} = \sqrt{256} = 16.

b.

If tan⁡θ=512 \tan\theta = \dfrac{5}{12} , find

  • i.h;

  • ii.sin⁡θ=513 \sin\theta = \dfrac{5}{13} , cos⁡θ=1213 \cos\theta = \dfrac{12}{13} .
c.

If cos⁡θ=817 \cos\theta = \dfrac{8}{17} , find sin θ and tan θ.

Answer

With b = 8k and h = 17k: p=(17k)2−(8k)2=225k2=15k p = \sqrt{(17k)^2 - (8k)^2} = \sqrt{225k^2} = 15k .
sin⁡θ=1517 \sin\theta = \dfrac{15}{17} , tan⁡θ=158 \tan\theta = \dfrac{15}{8} . Check: (1517)2+(817)2=225+64289=1 \left(\dfrac{15}{17}\right)^2 + \left(\dfrac{8}{17}\right)^2 = \dfrac{225 + 64}{289} = 1 ✓.

Question 6

a.

A ladder 60 ft long leans against a wall and reaches 303 30\sqrt3 ft up it. Find the angles the ladder makes with the ground and with the wall.

60 ft30√3 ftFWT
Figure 20.24
Answer

With the ground, at F: sin⁡θ=30360=32=sin⁡60∘ \sin\theta = \dfrac{30\sqrt3}{60} = \dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} = \sin 60^\circ , so the angle is 60°. The angles of △FWT add up to 180°, so the angle at the wall is 180∘−90∘−60∘=30∘ 180^\circ - 90^\circ - 60^\circ = 30^\circ .
60° with the ground and 30° with the wall.

b.

A clock tower is 36 m high. From a point on the ground 123 12\sqrt3 m from its foot, find the angle of elevation of its top: the angle the line to the top makes with the ground.

Answer
θ36 m12√3 mABC
Figure 20.25

tan⁡θ=36123=33=3=tan⁡60∘ \tan\theta = \dfrac{36}{12\sqrt3} = \dfrac{3}{\sqrt3} = \sqrt3 = \tan 60^\circ , so θ=60∘ \theta = 60^\circ . The tower is taller than the distance, so the angle had to be more than 45°. (The other angle of the triangle, at the top, between the tower and the line of sight, is 30°.)

c.

In the figure, VS = 40.5 ft and the tree SJ is x ft tall.

  • i.What must x be for both acute angles to be 45°?
  • ii.How long is VJ then?
45°45°40.5 ftx ftVSJ
Figure 20.26
Answer
  • i.Both acute angles 45° makes the triangle isosceles: tan⁡45∘=x40.5=1 \tan 45^\circ = \dfrac{x}{40.5} = 1 , so x = 40.5: the tree is 40.5 ft tall.
  • ii.VJ=40.5cos⁡45∘=40.52≈ VJ = \dfrac{40.5}{\cos 45^\circ} = 40.5\sqrt2 \approx 57.28 ft.
d.

Answer
60°12 ftlTWF
Figure 20.27

sin⁡60∘=12l \sin 60^\circ = \dfrac{12}{l} , so l=123/2=243=83≈ l = \dfrac{12}{\sqrt3/2} = \dfrac{24}{\sqrt3} = 8\sqrt3 \approx 13.86 ft (83 8\sqrt3 ft).

Question 3

a.

How tall is the bamboo?

Answer

tan⁡30∘=h30 \tan 30^\circ = \dfrac{h}{30} , so h=303=103≈ h = \dfrac{30}{\sqrt3} = 10\sqrt3 \approx 17.32 ft (103 10\sqrt3 ft).

b.

How far towards the bamboo must you walk for its top to be at an angle of 45°?

Answer
30°45°12.68 ft10√3 ft10√3 ftONFT
Figure 20.31

At 45° the distance equals the height: 103≈17.32 10\sqrt3 \approx 17.32 ft from the foot. So walk 30−103≈ 30 - 10\sqrt3 \approx 12.68 ft towards it.

c.

After 4 days the bamboo has grown to 303 30\sqrt3 ft. What angle does its top make now, seen from the first point?

Answer
60°30 ft30√3 ftOFG
Figure 20.32

tan⁡θ=30330=3=tan⁡60∘ \tan\theta = \dfrac{30\sqrt3}{30} = \sqrt3 = \tan 60^\circ , so θ=60∘ \theta = 60^\circ . Tripling the height took the angle from 30° to 60°, not to 90°: the angle doesn’t grow in step with the height. (This bamboo grew 203≈34.6 20\sqrt3 \approx 34.6 ft, about 10.6 m, in 4 days: faster than any real bamboo. The fastest kinds grow up to about 91 cm in a day.)
