BLE Model Paper 5
Full marks: 50Time: 2 hours
All questions are compulsory.
Write your answers on paper first. Then open each answer and its marking scheme, and give yourself one mark for each point you got. In multiple choice, your first choice counts.
Section A
10 × 1 = 101. Choose the correct option for each of the following questions.
Why should goggles be worn while diluting an acid in the laboratory?
Pick an answer to see why.
The fuser of a photocopy machine has stopped heating. What will be wrong with the copies it makes?
Pick an answer to see why.
A statement and two arguments are given below.
Statement: In the five-kingdom system, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are placed in the kingdom Monera, not in Plantae.
Argument 1: Blue-green algae have a proper nucleus, inside a nuclear membrane.
Argument 2: Blue-green algae are prokaryotes: their cells have no proper nucleus.
Pick an answer to see why.
Which of the following reproduces asexually by budding?
Pick an answer to see why.
A motorcycle moves east at 12 m/s, and a jeep moves west at 18 m/s on the same road. What is the relative velocity of the motorcycle with respect to the jeep?
Pick an answer to see why.
A statement and two arguments are given below.
Statement: On a cold morning, a steel spoon and a wooden spoon lie in the same kitchen, but the steel spoon feels much colder to the hand.
Argument 1: Steel is a good conductor of heat, so it carries heat away from the hand much faster than wood does.
Argument 2: The steel spoon is at a lower temperature than the wooden spoon.
Pick an answer to see why.
Why is a convex mirror used as the side mirror of a bus?
Pick an answer to see why.
The atomic weight of nitrogen is 14 and that of hydrogen is 1. What is the molecular weight of ammonia, NH₃?
Pick an answer to see why.
Small pieces of magnesium, zinc, iron and copper are dropped into four test tubes of dilute hydrochloric acid. In which test tube do no bubbles of gas come off?
Pick an answer to see why.
Which of the following is a non-metallic mineral?
Pick an answer to see why.
Section B
8 × 1 = 82. Write very short answers to the following questions.
Bishal gets a text message: “Congratulations! You have won a smartphone in our lucky draw. To claim it, reply with the code we have just sent to your phone.” What should he do, and why?
Answer
He should not reply or share the code, and should delete the message: it is phishing, a fake message that tricks people into giving away a code or password, so that someone else can get into their account.
Marking scheme
- Not share the code (delete or ignore it), because it is phishing (a trick to get into his account).
What is a tissue?
Answer
A group of cells of the same kind (or of a few kinds) that work together to do a particular job, such as muscle tissue or nerve tissue.
Marking scheme
- A group of similar cells working together to do a particular job.
How does digging sand and gravel from a river carelessly harm its biodiversity?
Answer
It destroys the homes (habitat) of the fish, insects and plants of the river bed, and makes the banks collapse, so the river’s life and the plants along it are lost.
Marking scheme
- It destroys the river’s habitats (river life is lost, banks collapse).
Which type of mirror does a dentist use to look at a patient’s teeth?
Answer
A concave mirror: held close to a tooth, it gives an enlarged, erect image of it.
Marking scheme
- A concave mirror.
What is a natural magnet? Give one example.
Answer
A magnet found in nature, a rock that is a magnet by itself, for example lodestone (magnetite).
Marking scheme
- A magnet found in nature, e.g. lodestone (magnetite).
Hydrogen is placed in group 1 of the modern periodic table, but it is often drawn a little apart from the other elements of the group. Why?
Answer
It has one valence electron, like lithium and sodium, so it goes in group 1; but it is a gas and a non-metal, without the metallic properties of the other group 1 elements.
Marking scheme
- It has 1 valence electron like group 1, but it is a non-metal (no metallic properties).
Which alloy is used to make the bodies of airplanes, and why?
Answer
Duralumin (aluminium with a little copper, manganese and magnesium), because it is light and yet nearly as strong as steel.
Marking scheme
- Duralumin, because it is light and strong.
Sanjiv says, “Every base is an alkali.” Is he right? Give a reason.
Answer
No. An alkali is a base that dissolves in water. Some bases, such as copper oxide and iron oxide, don’t dissolve in water, so they are bases but not alkalis. (Every alkali is a base, but not every base is an alkali.)
Marking scheme
- No: some bases (such as copper oxide or iron oxide) don’t dissolve in water, so they aren’t alkalis.
Section C
8 × 2 = 16Write short answers to the following questions.
Nima is doing a survey of how the families of her tole make their drinking water safe. One question in her questionnaire is: “You boil your drinking water, don’t you?”
- i.What is wrong with this question? Rewrite it as a good survey question.
- ii.After she has collected the answers from all the families, what is the next step of her survey?
Answer
- i.It pushes people towards the answer “yes”, the answer the question seems to want. A better question is short, asks one thing and gives choices, for example: “How do you make your drinking water safe? a. boil it b. filter it c. use chlorine drops d. nothing”.
- ii.Analyzing the data: counting the answers (for example as percentages, in a table or a bar diagram), so that she can draw a conclusion.
Marking scheme
- i. It suggests the answer (leading question), with a fair rewritten question, such as one with choices.
- ii. Analyzing the data.
Give reasons:
- i.Antibiotics don’t cure the common cold.
- ii.Farmers often grow beans or lentils in a field before a crop of wheat or maize.
Answer
- i.The common cold is caused by a virus (rhinovirus). Antibiotics kill bacteria; a virus is not a cell and has no metabolism of its own, so antibiotics do nothing to it.
- ii.Rhizobium bacteria living in the root nodules of beans and lentils take nitrogen from the air and turn it into compounds plants can use. These stay in the soil and make it more fertile for the next crop.
Marking scheme
- i. A cold is caused by a virus, and antibiotics work only on bacteria.
- ii. Rhizobium in their root nodules fixes nitrogen and makes the soil fertile.
The people of a village in Myagdi built a micro-hydropower plant themselves. Every family gave labor to dig the canal, and they planted trees and grass on the slope above it so that landslides wouldn’t block it.
- i.Which principle of sustainable development did the villagers follow by building it with their own labor?
- ii.Which aspect (pillar) of sustainable development does planting trees and grass on the slope look after?
Answer
- i.The principle of cultural conservation and public participation: the people themselves take part in the work, so they feel it is theirs, look after it, and it lasts.
- ii.The environmental aspect: the trees and grass protect the slope, soil and water (conserving the environment), which also keeps the canal and the plant working for a long time.
Marking scheme
- i. The principle of cultural conservation and public participation.
- ii. The environmental aspect.
Write any two differences between a real image and a virtual image.
Answer
Any two:
| Real image | Virtual image |
|---|---|
| It can be obtained on a screen. | It can’t be obtained on a screen. |
| It is formed where the reflected rays actually meet. | It is formed where the reflected rays only appear to meet. |
| It is formed in front of the mirror. | It is formed behind the mirror. |
| It is inverted. | It is erect. |
Marking scheme
- One correct difference.
- A second correct difference.
Give reasons:
- i.Cooking pots are made of metal, but their handles are made of wood or plastic.
- ii.Several thin layers of clothes keep us warmer in winter than one thick layer.
Answer
- i.Metal is a good conductor of heat, so it carries the heat of the flame quickly to the food. Wood and plastic are poor conductors (insulators), so the heat doesn’t reach the hand holding the handle.
- ii.Air is a very poor conductor of heat. Several layers trap more still air between them than one thick layer does, so the body’s heat escapes more slowly.
Marking scheme
- i. Metal conducts heat well to the food; wood and plastic are poor conductors, so the handle stays cool.
- ii. More layers trap more air, a poor conductor, so less body heat escapes.
Give reasons:
- i.When one bulb in a house fuses, the other bulbs keep glowing.
- ii.If all the bulbs of a house were joined in series, they would all glow dimly.
Answer
- i.The bulbs of a house are joined in parallel: each is on its own branch between the live and the neutral wire, so losing one path doesn’t stop the current in the others.
- ii.In series, the same current passes through all the bulbs one after another and they share the 230 V, so each gets only part of it and glows dimly.
Marking scheme
- i. House bulbs are in parallel, each on its own path, so the others still get current.
- ii. In series they share the supply voltage, so each gets less and is dim.
In the laboratory, Sabina warms a little ammonium chloride with slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) in a test tube. A gas with a sharp smell comes off.
- i.Name the gas, and write how it can be tested.
- ii.Write the balanced chemical equation of the reaction.
Answer
- i.Ammonia. A moist red litmus paper held at the mouth of the tube turns blue (ammonia is a basic gas); it also has a sharp smell, like a dirty toilet.
- ii.A base and an ammonium salt give a salt, ammonia and water:
Marking scheme
- i. Ammonia, which turns moist red litmus blue.
- ii. 2NH₄Cl + Ca(OH)₂ → CaCl₂ + 2NH₃ + 2H₂O.
A cartoon in a children’s magazine shows a cave man riding a dinosaur. Could this ever have happened? Give two reasons.
Answer
No, it couldn’t.
- a.The dinosaurs lived in the Mesozoic era and died out at its end, about 66 million years ago, after an asteroid hit the Earth (only the birds, a group of dinosaurs, survived).
- b.Humans came very late, in the Cenozoic era: our species, Homo sapiens, appeared only about 300,000 years ago. So more than 65 million years separate the last dinosaurs from the first humans.
Marking scheme
- Dinosaurs died out at the end of the Mesozoic era, about 66 million years ago.
- Humans appeared only about 300,000 years ago (in the Cenozoic), millions of years later.
Section D
4 × 4 = 16Write long answers to the following questions.
Sushila wants to download her Grade 8 Science textbook at home. Her family pays a company every month for an internet connection. She types www.moecdc.gov.np into a web browser and opens the Curriculum Development Centre’s website.
- i.What is the company that gives her family the internet connection called? Name one such company in Nepal. (1)
- ii.Write the full form of URL. (1)
- iii.What is a website? (1)
- iv.Write one difference between a website and a search engine. (1)
Answer
- i.An internet service provider (ISP): a company that gives people, businesses and offices access to the internet. Any one in Nepal: Nepal Telecom, WorldLink, Vianet, Subisu.
- ii.Uniform Resource Locator.
- iii.A collection of related web pages kept together under one address (URL), holding the information of a person or an organization.
- iv.A website, such as moecdc.gov.np, holds its own pages about one person or organization; a search engine, such as Google, is a program that searches the internet and lists the pages of many websites that match the keywords typed.
Marking scheme
- i. Internet service provider (ISP), with one example (Nepal Telecom, WorldLink, Vianet, Subisu).
- ii. Uniform Resource Locator.
- iii. A collection of related web pages under one address.
- iv. One correct difference (a website holds its own pages; a search engine finds pages on many websites).
Hari, a farmer in Mustang, wants to plant 200 apple trees that bear sweet fruit like the best tree in his orchard. His neighbor tells him to sow the seeds of that tree. The nursery offers him grafted saplings whose scions were taken from that same tree.
- i.Which of the two will bear fruit like his best tree? Give a reason. (1)
- ii.Why may the trees grown from the seeds of the best tree bear different fruit? (1)
- iii.If all 200 trees are grafted from the same tree, what risk does Hari take? (1)
- iv.Hari says, “Then sexual reproduction is of no use to plants.” Do you agree? Give a reason. (1)
Answer
- i.The grafted saplings. The scion is a twig of the best tree itself, so the part that bears fruit has the same genes as that tree and gives the same fruit (and it starts bearing in a few years, because the scion is already mature).
- ii.A seed is formed by sexual reproduction: the pollen that fertilized the flower may have come from another tree. So each seedling is a new mix of two parents and shows variation; its fruit may be quite different, even sour.
- iii.All the trees will be identical (copies, with the same genes). A new disease or pest that harms one of them can harm them all, and he could lose the whole orchard at once.
- iv.No. Sexual reproduction gives young that are each a little different (variation). When the environment changes, for example with a new disease or a drought, some of them are likely to survive, and new and better varieties can be found among them. (Even the stock of a grafted sapling is grown from a seed.)
Marking scheme
- i. Grafted saplings: the scion comes from the best tree, so it has the same genes (same fruit).
- ii. Seeds come from sexual reproduction (pollen may be from another tree), so the seedlings show variation.
- iii. Identical trees: one disease or pest can destroy them all.
- iv. Disagrees: sexual reproduction gives variation, helping plants survive changes (and giving new varieties).
A brick is 20 cm long, 10 cm wide and 5 cm thick, and it weighs 30 N.
- i.Calculate the pressure it puts on the ground when it lies on its largest face. (1)
- ii.Calculate the pressure when it stands on its smallest face (on its end). (1)
- iii.How many times greater is the pressure in (ii) than in (i)? On which face will it sink deepest into soft sand? (1)
- iv.A mason lays four such bricks, one on top of another, all on their largest faces. Calculate the pressure on the ground under them. (1)
Answer
i. Largest face = 0.2 m × 0.1 m = 0.02 m².
ii. Smallest face = 0.1 m × 0.05 m = 0.005 m².
- iii.6,000 ÷ 1,500 = 4 times. It sinks deepest standing on its end (smallest face), because the same weight acts on the smallest area.
- iv.The force is now 4 × 30 N = 120 N on the same 0.02 m²:
the same pressure as one brick standing on its end.
Marking scheme
- i. Area 0.02 m², P = 30 ÷ 0.02 = 1,500 Pa.
- ii. Area 0.005 m², P = 30 ÷ 0.005 = 6,000 Pa.
- iii. 4 times; it sinks deepest on its end (smallest area).
- iv. P = 120 ÷ 0.02 = 6,000 Pa.
The electronic configurations of four elements, P, Q, R and S, are given in the table. (The letters are not their symbols.)
| Element | P | Q | R | S |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electronic configuration | 2, 4 | 2, 8 | 2, 8, 4 | 2, 8, 3 |
- i.Which two elements are in the same group? Give a reason. (1)
- ii.Which element is an inert gas? Give a reason. (1)
- iii.Which has the bigger atom, P or R? Why? (1)
- iv.Element S is a metal. Why? (1)
Answer
- i.P and R: both have 4 valence electrons, so they are in the same group (group 14). (P is carbon, R is silicon.)
- ii.Q (neon): its outer shell is full, with 8 electrons, so it is already stable and neither gains nor loses electrons.
- iii.R. It has 3 shells and P has only 2; going down a group, each element has one more shell, so its atom is bigger.
- iv.S (aluminium) has 3 valence electrons. Atoms with 1 to 3 electrons in their outer shell react by losing them, and elements that lose electrons are metals.
Marking scheme
- i. P and R, both with 4 valence electrons.
- ii. Q, with a full outer shell of 8 electrons (stable).
- iii. R, because it has more shells (3 against 2).
- iv. It has 3 valence electrons, which it loses in reactions (metals lose electrons).
