Who proposed the five-kingdom system of classification?
Pick an answer to see why.
In a laboratory in Kathmandu, a tiny piece is cut from the shoot tip of a healthy banana plant and placed on a jelly of nutrients in a germ-free glass jar. In a few months it gives thousands of small, disease-free banana plants. Which method of propagation is this?
Pick an answer to see why.
A statement and two arguments are given below.
Statement: A porter's namlo (head strap) is made wide so that it doesn't cut into his forehead.
Argument 1: A wide strap touches the head over a larger area, so the same weight makes less pressure.
Argument 2: A wide strap makes the load lighter, so less force presses on the head.
Pick an answer to see why.
A candle is placed 30 cm in front of a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm. Where is its image formed, and what is it like?
Pick an answer to see why.

Pick an answer to see why.
Section B
8 × 1 = 82. Write very short answers to the following questions.
What is the homepage of a website?
Answer
The first page you see when you open a website. It sets the look of the whole site and has links to its other pages.
Marking scheme
- The first (main) page of a website, with links to its other pages.
Hari Bahadur cannot see well enough to read an ATM's display screen. Which output device of an ATM helps him use it?
Answer
The speaker (with its socket for earphones): many ATMs speak their instructions aloud, so a person who can't see the screen can follow them.
Marking scheme
- The speaker (earphone socket), which speaks the instructions aloud.
In an office, the computers got infected with malware one after another across the office network, although nobody opened any email, attachment or file. Which kind of malware was it most likely to be?
Answer
A worm: it spreads by itself across networks. A virus spreads only when the files it hides in are copied or opened, and nobody opened any.
Marking scheme
- A worm (it spreads by itself across networks).
How does the invasive plant banmara (the climbing Mikania) harm the forests of Chitwan?
Answer
It climbs over and smothers the trees and plants, spreads fast with no natural enemies here, and pushes out the native plants (and with them the animals that feed on them), so the biodiversity of the forest falls.
Marking scheme
- It smothers the native trees and plants and pushes them out, lowering biodiversity.
What is the dormancy of a seed?
Answer
The resting state of a ripe seed, in which it stays alive but unchanged and doesn't grow, for months or years if kept dry.
Marking scheme
- The resting state of a seed in which it stays alive but doesn't grow.
A 9 W LED bulb gives as much light as a 60 W filament bulb. Which should Sunita buy for her study room, and why?
Answer
The 9 W LED bulb: it gives the same light while using far less electrical energy. A filament bulb turns more than 90% of its energy into heat, not light, so it costs more to run.
Marking scheme
- The LED bulb, because it gives the same light for much less energy (the filament bulb wastes most of its energy as heat).
The elements of group 17 are called halogens. Why?
Answer
Halogen means “salt maker”: these very reactive non-metals join with metals to make salts; for example, chlorine and sodium make common salt (sodium chloride).
Marking scheme
- Because they join with metals to form salts (halogen = salt maker), e.g. chlorine + sodium → common salt.
A log of firewood burns, and the ash left weighs far less than the log. Yet mass is never created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. How can both be true?
Answer
The rest of the mass has not been lost: the burning made gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor and smoke) that escaped into the air. If the wood were burnt in a sealed vessel, as Lavoisier did with his reactions, the total mass would stay the same.
Marking scheme
- The products are mostly gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor) that escape into the air; with them, the total mass is the same.
Section C
8 × 2 = 16Write short answers to the following questions.
Kamala surveyed 40 households in her tole about how they store their grain. 18 households keep it in airtight metal drums, 14 in sacks and 8 in bamboo bins (bhakari). From this she wrote: “Most families in Nepal store their grain in airtight drums.”
- i.Calculate the percentage of the households that use airtight drums.
- ii.Give two reasons why her conclusion is not justified by her data.
Answer
- i. (sacks 35%, bamboo bins 20%).
- ii.a. 45% is less than half of the households, so even in her tole “most” is wrong; she can only say that airtight drums are the most common of the three ways.
- b.She asked only 40 households of one tole. They can't stand for all the families of Nepal, where the climate, the crops and the ways of storing grain differ from place to place.
Marking scheme
- i. 18 ÷ 40 × 100 = 45%.
- ii. Both reasons: 45% is less than half, so not “most”; 40 households of one tole can't speak for the whole of Nepal.
A momo shop in Dharan has started a page on social media. Write any two ways in which social media can help its business.
Answer
Any two:
- a.Brand development: many people in and around Dharan learn about the shop, its menu and its offers, as the page works as an advertisement.
- b.Customer interaction: customers can write reviews and comments; good reviews bring in new customers, and bad ones show the owner what to improve.
- c.The shop can tell its customers at once about new dishes, opening hours or home delivery.
Marking scheme
- One correct way (more people learn about the shop: advertising, brand development).
- A second correct way (reviews and comments from customers, quick news to customers).
Give reasons:
- i.If the spiny babbler died out in Nepal, it would be lost from the whole world.
- ii.When the bees of an area are killed by careless spraying of pesticides, the harvest of many crops there falls.
Answer
- i.The spiny babbler is found only in Nepal (it is Nepal's only endemic bird, living in the scrub of the middle hills). There is no population anywhere else to take its place, so losing it here would mean its extinction.
- ii.About three out of four kinds of food crops depend, at least in part, on animals, mostly bees and other insects, to pollinate them. Without bees, fewer flowers are pollinated, and fewer fruits and seeds form.
Marking scheme
- i. It lives only in Nepal (endemic), so its loss here is its loss from the world.
- ii. Bees pollinate many crops; without them fewer fruits and seeds form.
Give reasons:
- i.Seeds are dried well in the sun before they are stored.
- ii.When a bean seed germinates, its cotyledons come above the ground and turn green.
Answer
- i.In a dry seed almost no chemical activity (metabolism) goes on, so it stays dormant, doesn't germinate or use up its stored food, and keeps alive for a long time. (Dry seeds also don't let molds and bacteria grow on them.)
- ii.In a bean the hypocotyl grows into a hook and pulls the cotyledons above the soil (epigeal germination). There they turn green and make food by photosynthesis for a few days, the young plant's first leaves, until its true leaves grow.
Marking scheme
- i. Drying stops metabolism, so the seed stays dormant and keeps (doesn't germinate or rot) in storage.
- ii. Epigeal germination: the cotyledons are lifted above the ground and make food by photosynthesis for the seedling.
A shop plays music from a loudspeaker at a sound level of 90 dB, while normal conversation is about 60 dB.
- i.How many times greater is the intensity of the loudspeaker's sound than that of the conversation?
- ii.When the neighbors complain, the shopkeeper turns the music down to 80 dB and says, "Now its intensity is half what it was." Is he right? Give a reason.
Answer
- i.The loudspeaker is 90 − 60 = 30 dB louder. Each 10 dB more means ten times the intensity, so 30 dB more means 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 times the intensity.
- ii.No. 10 dB less means one tenth of the intensity, not half. (It does sound about half as loud, since each 10 dB sounds about twice as loud to us; that may be why he thinks so.)
Marking scheme
- i. 30 dB more = 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 times the intensity.
- ii. No: 10 dB less is one tenth of the intensity (it only sounds about half as loud).
Give reasons on the basis of geomagnetism:
- i.Auroras are seen mostly near the North and South Poles.
- ii.The magnetism of old lava rocks helps geologists to work out their age.
Answer
- i.The Sun sends out fast, electrically charged particles (the solar wind). The Earth's magnetic field turns most of them aside and steers the rest towards the polar regions, where they make the upper air glow as the aurora.
- ii.When molten lava cools into igneous rock, its magnetic minerals freeze in the direction of the Earth's field at that time. The field has flipped many times, so the direction of a rock's magnetism tells geologists when it formed.
Marking scheme
- i. The Earth's magnetic field steers the Sun's charged particles towards the poles, where they make the air glow.
- ii. Lava's magnetic minerals freeze in the direction of the field of that time, and the field has changed (flipped), so it dates the rock.
- i.Hydrogen burns in oxygen to form water. Write the balanced chemical equation of the reaction.
- ii.In a lime kiln, calcium carbonate is heated to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide: CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂. Show by counting the atoms that this equation is already balanced.
Answer
i. Skeleton: H₂ + O₂ → H₂O. There are 2 O on the left and 1 on the right, so put 2 before H₂O: H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O (now 4 H on the right). Put 2 before H₂:
Check: left 4 H, 2 O; right 4 H, 2 O.
ii. Left: 1 Ca, 1 C, 3 O. Right: 1 Ca, 1 C, and 1 + 2 = 3 O. Each kind of atom is equal on both sides, so it is balanced.
Marking scheme
- i. 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O.
- ii. Both sides have 1 Ca, 1 C and 3 O.
Write the names of any two energy minerals and one use of each.
Answer
Any two:
- a.Coal: burnt for the very high heat of cement factories, brick kilns and blast furnaces.
- b.Petroleum: runs vehicles, and is used to cook and to make electricity.
- c.Natural gas: burnt for heat and to make electricity (it feeds the flames of Jwala Mai at Muktinath).
- d.Uranium: fuels nuclear power stations.
Marking scheme
- One energy mineral with a correct use.
- A second energy mineral with a correct use.
Section D
4 × 4 = 16Write long answers to the following questions.
Each of the cells in the table has a very large number of one part, or a very large one.
| Cell | Where it is from | What it has a lot of |
|---|---|---|
| P | a leg muscle of a porter who carries loads up the hills all day | mitochondria |
| Q | a white blood cell | lysosomes |
| R | a gland that makes saliva | large Golgi bodies |
| S | a cell that makes a great deal of protein | many ribosomes and a large nucleolus |
- i.Why do the muscle cells P have so many mitochondria? (1)
- ii.Why does the white blood cell Q have so many lysosomes? (1)
- iii.Why are the Golgi bodies of the gland cells R so large? (1)
- iv.Why does cell S have a large nucleolus as well as many ribosomes? (1)
Answer
- i.Mitochondria release energy from food (glucose) by cellular respiration. The porter's leg muscles work hard all day and need a great deal of energy, so their cells have many mitochondria.
- ii.Lysosomes are full of digestive enzymes. A white blood cell swallows germs and digests them, so it needs many lysosomes.
- iii.The Golgi body sorts, packs and sends out (secretes) the substances a cell makes. A gland cell secretes saliva with its enzymes all the time, so its Golgi bodies are large.
- iv.Ribosomes join amino acids to make proteins, so a cell making much protein needs many of them, and the nucleolus makes the ribosomes, so it is large too.
Marking scheme
- i. Mitochondria release energy by respiration; hard-working muscle needs much energy.
- ii. Lysosomes' enzymes digest the germs the white blood cell swallows.
- iii. The Golgi body packs and secretes substances; the gland secretes saliva all the time.
- iv. Ribosomes make proteins and the nucleolus makes ribosomes.
An irrigation pond in a village of Dang is filled with water to a depth of 3.4 m. The outlet at its bottom is closed by an iron plate of area 0.05 m². (Density of water = 1,000 kg/m³, density of mercury = 13,600 kg/m³, g = 9.8 m/s²)
- i.Calculate the pressure of the water at the bottom of the pond. (1)
- ii.Calculate the force that the water exerts on the iron plate. (1)
- iii.How tall a column of mercury would exert the same pressure? (1)
- iv.The farmers make the pond twice as wide but keep the same depth of water. What happens to the pressure on the plate? Give a reason. (1)
Answer
- i.
- ii.From ,
iii. From ,
(Mercury is 13.6 times as dense as water, so 3.4 m ÷ 13.6 = 0.25 m.)
iv. It stays the same. The pressure of a liquid depends only on its depth, its density and g (), not on the width or area of the container.
Marking scheme
- i. P = 3.4 × 1000 × 9.8 = 33,320 Pa.
- ii. F = 33,320 × 0.05 = 1,666 N.
- iii. h = 33,320 ÷ (13,600 × 9.8) = 0.25 m (25 cm).
- iv. The same, because P = hdg doesn't depend on the width (area) of the pond.
The figure shows a solar water heater on the roof of a house in Kathmandu. Water heated in the panel reaches the tank without any pump.
- i.By which way does heat travel from the Sun to the panel? Why can't it travel by the other two ways? (1)
- ii.Why is the panel covered with a sheet of glass? (1)
- iii.Why is the tank fixed higher than the panel? How does the water move between them without a pump? (1)
- iv.Why is the tank wrapped in a thick layer of insulation under a shiny metal cover? (1)
Answer
- i.By radiation. Between the Sun and the Earth's air is almost empty space, with no particles to pass heat on by conduction or to carry it by convection; radiation needs no material medium.
- ii.Sunlight (short waves) passes easily through the glass and warms the black plate, but the long-wave infrared that the warm plate gives out can hardly get back through the glass, and the glass also stops the warm air from blowing away. So heat is trapped, as in a greenhouse, and the water gets hotter.
- iii.The water heated in the panel expands, becomes less dense and rises up the pipe into the tank, while the cooler, denser water from the bottom of the tank sinks down the other pipe into the lower end of the panel. This natural convection current keeps going as long as the Sun shines, and it works only if the tank is above the panel.
- iv.The insulation is a poor conductor, so little heat escapes from the hot water by conduction, and the shiny cover is a poor emitter, so little heat is lost by radiation. The water stays hot into the night.
Marking scheme
- i. Radiation; there is no medium in space for conduction or convection.
- ii. Glass lets sunlight in but traps the heat given out by the plate (greenhouse effect).
- iii. Hot water, being less dense, rises into the tank and cold water sinks into the panel: natural convection.
- iv. Insulation (poor conductor) stops conduction; the shiny cover reduces radiation.
Pasang's kitchen has table salt, baking soda and washing soda, and his school lab has copper sulphate. All four are salts.
- i.What is a salt? (1)
- ii.Name the three types of salts according to the acid and the base that form them, with one example of each. (1)
- iii.Write any two physical properties of salts. (1)
- iv.Write one use each of washing soda and baking soda. (1)
Answer
- i.A salt is the compound formed when the hydrogen of an acid is replaced by a metal (or by ammonium), as in the reaction between an acid and a base (acid + base → salt + water).
- ii.Neutral salts, from a strong acid and a strong base: sodium chloride (NaCl). Acidic salts, from a strong acid and a weak base: ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl) or copper sulphate. Basic salts, from a strong base and a weak acid: sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃, washing soda).
- iii.Any two: most salts dissolve in water; most are white or colorless, though some are colored (copper sulphate blue); most don't taste salty (and many are poisonous); they have high melting and boiling points; neutral salts don't change the color of indicators.
- iv.Washing soda: for washing and cleaning, to remove the permanent hardness of water, or to make glass, paper and soap. Baking soda: to make baking powder, to make antacids, or in some fire extinguishers.
Marking scheme
- i. The compound formed when an acid's hydrogen is replaced by a metal (as when an acid reacts with a base).
- ii. Neutral (NaCl), acidic (NH₄Cl or CuSO₄) and basic (Na₂CO₃), each with an example.
- iii. Any two correct physical properties.
- iv. One correct use of washing soda and one of baking soda.
