The rules
- A verb agrees with its subject, not with a noun that comes between them: The box of crayons is on the desk.
- When the verb comes before the subject, find the subject after it: On the hill stand two old temples.
- Collective nouns like team, committee, and company are singular: The team is ready.
- Each, every, either, neither, and the number take singular verbs: Each of the bowls is clean.
- Subjects joined by and are plural, but with or or nor the verb agrees with the nearer subject: Neither the teacher nor the students were late.
- A pronoun agrees with the noun it stands for, so a singular noun takes it and its: The company opened its new office.
- Use object pronouns after verbs and prepositions and subject pronouns as subjects: between the editor and me; My friend and I left.
