The rules
- In a yes/no question, the helping verb comes before the subject: Your hotel was near the beach → Was your hotel near the beach?
- With no helping verb, add do, does or did, and the main verb goes back to its base form: They had fun → Did they have fun? (never Did they had).
- A wh- question puts the question word first, then the helping verb and the subject: What are the kids doing? Where does Simran live?
- When who or what is the subject, there is no do: Who broke the window? But Who did you meet? (you met someone).
- Inside a polite or indirect question, the words go in statement order: Can you tell me where the station is? (not where is the station).
- How many goes with things you can count, how much with things you can’t; how long asks about time, how often about frequency.
