Pin Impression Board

← All Exhibits

Almost 10,000 closely packed pins can slide independently in and out. Press your hand, face or another object against one side, and the pins move to different depths, reproducing its shape as a three-dimensional impression.

The idea is somewhat similar to a dot-matrix printer, where an image is built from many tiny points. But instead of forming a 3D shape, a dot-matrix printer uses small, rapidly moving pins to strike an ink ribbon and make dots on paper.
