Are the letters standing straight, or leaning?
Straight: every edge of every letter is exactly upright or level, though the letters seem to lean every which way.
Why? Where the letters’ black and white outlines cross the checks, the pieces look like a twisted cord, and your brain tilts each edge to follow it. James Fraser drew LIFE this way in 1908, the year of his spiral.
