The arch’s width, stood on end, reaches its top: 192 meters each way.
Bigger or smaller?
Gateway Arch
The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, USA. Is it taller than it is wide?
No: it is 192 meters tall and exactly 192 meters wide at its base.
Why? The vertical–horizontal illusion, built in steel: we overestimate heights, and the arch narrows as it rises, which makes it look taller still.
