The gecko, outlined.
Out in the world
Camouflage
There’s a gecko lying along this branch in Madagascar. Can you find it?
The lichen-colored bump along the top of the branch, almost its whole length, is the gecko: its skin matches the bark, and frills hide its outline.
Why? Your brain finds objects by their edges and by colors that differ from the background. The gecko’s skin matches the bark and the frills along its body hide its outline, so your brain sees only branch.
