9.

Three years ago the ages of Rajan and Nimesh were in the ratio 4 : 3. Three years from now they will be in the ratio 11 : 9. Find their present ages.

Answer

Let Rajan be x and Nimesh y years old now.
x−3y−3=43 \dfrac{x - 3}{y - 3} = \dfrac{4}{3} gives 3x − 9 = 4y − 12, so 3x = 4y − 3 …(i).
x+3y+3=119 \dfrac{x + 3}{y + 3} = \dfrac{11}{9} gives 9x + 27 = 11y + 33, so 9x = 11y + 6 …(ii).
(i) × 3: 9x = 12y − 9. Subtract (ii): 0 = y − 15, y = 15; then 3x = 57, x = 19.

Ten years ago the ratio of a father’s age to his son’s was 11 : 3. In five years the father will be 10 years more than twice his son’s age then. In how many years will the son be as old as his father is now?

Answer

Let the father be x and the son y years old now.
x−10y−10=113 \dfrac{x - 10}{y - 10} = \dfrac{11}{3} gives 3x − 30 = 11y − 110, so 3x = 11y − 80 …(i).
x + 5 = 2(y + 5) + 10 gives x = 2y + 15 …(ii).
Substitute (ii) into (i): 6y + 45 = 11y − 80, 5y = 125, y = 25; x = 65.
The son is 25 and the father 65, so the son will be 65 in 65 − 25 = 40 years.

A two-digit number is three times the sum of its digits. If 45 is added to the number, its digits swap places. Find the number.

Answer

Let the tens digit be x and the ones digit y.
10x + y = 3(x + y) gives 7x = 2y …(i).
10x + y + 45 = 10y + x gives 9y − 9x = 45, so y = x + 5 …(ii).
Substitute (ii) into (i): 7x = 2x + 10, x = 2, y = 7.
The number is 27. Check: 3 × (2 + 7) = 27 ✓; 27 + 45 = 72 ✓.

Question 13

13.

A two-digit number is larger than the number formed by swapping its digits. The two numbers add up to 121 and differ by 27. Find the number.
The textbook prints it without saying which of the two numbers is larger, and then its numbers don’t fit one answer only: 74 and 47 both work. Saying that the number is the larger, as here, leaves 74.

Answer

Let the tens digit be x and the ones digit y.
(10x + y) + (10y + x) = 121 gives 11(x + y) = 121, so x + y = 11.
The number is the larger, so (10x + y) − (10y + x) = 27 gives 9(x − y) = 27, so x − y = 3.
Add: 2x = 14, x = 7, y = 4. The number is 74. Check: 74 + 47 = 121 ✓, 74 − 47 = 27 ✓, and 74 is larger than 47 ✓.

Question 18

18.

Sambridi goes to Nepal Rastra Bank to change Rs 2,000 into new Rs 50 and Rs 100 notes. The bank gives her 25 notes in all. How many of each does she get?

Answer

Let her get x notes of Rs 50 and y of Rs 100: x + y = 25 …(i) and 50x + 100y = 2000, so x + 2y = 40 …(ii).
Subtract (i) from (ii): y = 15; x = 10.
10 notes of Rs 50 and 15 notes of Rs 100. Check: 500 + 1500 = 2000 ✓.
