The rules
  • Consider takes its description directly, but regard and view need as: many consider Pluto a dwarf planet; many regard it as a dwarf planet.
  • So and such introduce a result with that, and so … as to is the formal way to name a result with a verb: so cold that the lake froze; so cold as to freeze the lake.
  • Paired words keep their partners: between X and Y, from X to Y, not so much X as Y, the same as, in contrast to.
  • Some verbs fix the shape that follows them: credit Jenner with the vaccine, attribute the vaccine to Jenner, prohibit visitors from touching, forbid visitors to touch, require visitors to pay.
  • Some nouns and adjectives do too: capable of climbing, the ability to climb, a responsibility to climb safely.
  • Write the reason is that, not the reason is because, and depend on whether, not depend on if: the reason is that the road was closed.
  • Use as many as for things you count and as much as for amounts, and write estimated to be and in order to: as many as forty birds; as much as four tons; estimated to be 17,000 years old; in order to save water.
