The Möbius Strip

← All Exhibits

This sculpture is based on a Möbius strip — a surface made by giving a strip a half-twist and joining its ends. Remarkably, an ideal Möbius strip has only one continuous side and one boundary edge.

Trace a path along its surface and you can travel all the way around without ever crossing an edge, eventually returning to your starting point from the “other side.” It is a simple object with surprising properties that connect geometry, topology and art.

Try tracing the surface with your finger — you’ll see why it only has one side.

Additional Information

Cut a Mobius strip down the middle and, instead of two loops, you get one longer loop with two full twists.

It’s named after German mathematician August Mobius, who described it in 1858.
The recycling symbol is a version of this same one-sided loop shape.
