Bromeliads and Air Plants
← All Exhibits
These plants grow on driftwood and stones, not in soil. In the wild they perch on trees and rocks as epiphytes.
Many bromeliads catch rainwater in a cup at the center of their leaves, and tiny animals can live in these little pools. Air plants take in water and nutrients through tiny scales on their leaves; their roots only hold on.
Look into the center of a bromeliad. Can you see where it collects its water?
